School of Film and Young Filmmakers Program Faculty

The Northwest Film Center School of Film and Young Filmmakers Program welcomes resumes from independent mediamakers with an interest in teaching youth and adults enrolled in the School of Film's year-round curriculum, and/or an interest in teaching through outreach initiatives with schools and arts, social service, and business partners in the community. Academic credentials and teaching experience desirable but not required. Inquiries from filmmakers who are fluent Spanish-speakers are especially welcome.

INTERNSHIPS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

PR/Marketing Internship

The PR/Marketing Intern’s primary responsibility is to help identify and develop audiences for, and public awareness of, the Northwest Film Center’s exhibition, education and artist service activities. The Intern works closely with the PR/Marketing Manager and PR/Marketing Associate on promotion and public relations activities that expand the base of members, sponsors, and other community partners. Key activities include: 

  • Promoting Film Center special events and ongoing public program
  • Researching and developing community contacts and co-sponsors
  • Developing content for social media channels and website
  • Occasional clerical duties including answering phones, data entry, and mailings
  • Maintaining press and library files
  • Other duties/special projects as mutually agreed upon.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Background in film and/or the arts preferred
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to deal with the public
  • Organized work habits and attention to detail
  • Mac software skills a plus

Compensation:
Unpaid position. Interns enjoy free admission to Film Center exhibition programs.

Duration:
3-6 month commitment; 15-20 hours per week.

NW Filmmakers’ Festival Intern/Volunteer

This is an unpaid position for either a Festival Intern (for currently enrolled students) or Volunteer who will develop a working knowledge of the independent film arts by assisting in the production and promotion of one of the country's largest and oldest regional film festivals, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival.

Hours:
Flexible hours, minimum of 10 hours a week required.

Benefits:

  • The Festival Assistant will gain an understanding of the independent filmmaking community in the Northwest, as well as develop organizational and technical skills useful in producing large-scale events.
  • Upon completion of the position, assistants may be eligible to receive recommendations and references for future employment.
  • During the course of the position, assistants may attend regular admission Film Center screenings free of charge.

Dates:
June through November (flexible)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Regional Services Manager and aides in coordinating many aspects of the Northwest Filmmakers Festival, including outreach to artists and arts organizations.
  • Coordinates the Northwest Filmmakers’ Un-conference occurring within the Festival.
  • Receives and organizes entries for the Festival and maintains a database of Northwest artists.
  • Assists in development and sponsor relations.
  • Assists in light clerical duties, shipping, and organization of print traffic.
  • Assists in outreach to communities and organizations with the aim toward expanding audiences.

Attributes and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently with limited resources.
  • Preference to those able to commit to work through the Festival, November 12-17, 2015.
  • Receives and organizes entries for the Festival and maintains a database of Northwest artists.
  • Excellent phone skills required.
  • Macintosh computer and Microsoft Office skills required.

Education Intern


Education Interns will gain a working knowledge of the operations and services of one of the country’s largest regional media arts centers and community film schools.

Hours:
Flexible hours, but a minimum of 12-15 hours per week is required.
Daytime, evening, weekday, and weekend shifts available.

Compensation:
This in an unpaid volunteer position.

Benefits:
The Intern may develop organizational, administrative, technical, and interpersonal skills which can later be applied in a wide range of employment situations. Specific skills in film and video production may be learned, including operation of cameras, projectors, and editing software. Interns may receive references and recommendations for future employment or education opportunities, and become qualified for consideration for specific job openings at the Film Center. Interns may attend regular admission Film Center Exhibition Program screenings free of charge.

  • Fall / Winter Term — mid-September through late April

  • Winter / Spring Term — mid-January through late May

  • Summer / Fall Term — mid-June through mid-December

Duties and Responsibilities:
Works with education staff on basic activities associated with equipment maintenance/checkout, inventory control, public inquiries, customer service, registration, and promotion/marketing. Assists staff in monitoring use of the School of Film facility. Assists with assembling and testing equipment for instructional use. Cleans, arranges, and sets up rooms for classes and workshops. Duplicates printed and media materials and performs DVD duplication. May work on special projects related to student recruitment, curriculum development, youth media festival coordination, film archiving, and other areas.

Attributes and Qualifications:
Ability to work independently and creatively with limited resources. 
Organized and methodical with strong attention to detail.
Macintosh computer skills desirable; basic knowledge of film and/or video equipment preferred.
